GDBBX1705
What an incredibly frustrating experience. I couldn't find a single coupon, out of dozens upon dozens, that made a domain renewal less than $10 today. No discounts for a single renewal or a percentage of my entire purchase, or even every single one that said "35% off storewide," which normally means every product and every customer gets that discount. I can't even get 10% off. This is the norm I have gotten used to: hunting for deals and actually finding them. Now it seems discounts are only for SSLs, hosting plans, new customers, or new domains. Jacking up prices and making coupons useful only to those who don't know you is not the way to keep your old customers. GDBBX1705 (worked on someone's .net, though it's for .com, and saved them $7) and GDBBG1562 were the only coupons that took anything off. That anything was a few measly cents.
GDBBG1562 was supposed to be 30% off including renewals, and it's a current coupon! Just four days ago, someone used BB2086D60 for their renewal, but it didn't work for me at all. Since the site said all these coupons were successfully applied, it seems that GoDaddy is automatically discounting the domains before even entering codes now. I think I remember a while ago, the names were more than $13 before I used a coupon. Now they are $10.99. So these 35% percent coupons are a pointless joke.
I have three domains to renew. Not much, but every dollar adds up. Suddenly I have to spend 30 to 40 percent more than I ever have. Maybe it's just the time of year. Maybe the coupons didn't sync up for me and all the good ones have expired before the new ones are released, but this has never happened before. (Actually, maybe once.) Guess I just have to deal with it and renew one for now. I can wait another month on the others. Of course, I know GoDaddy needs to make money, but with all the complaints I've read out there about them over the years, I've never really been trusting. You want to trust the company you do business with. I've haven't had any trouble yet, but it always finds me. If these codes keep failing me, I'll know it has.
Some day soon I'm going to have to test one of the more respected registrars. I went with GoDaddy long ago because they were cheap. If that's not the case anymore, I have to weigh my options. I don't mean to advertise, but I just did the renewal of some domains and found exactly that same coupon using Honey, a free Chrome plugin. It automatically tests 25 coupon codes (I suppose they crawl for them) and afterwards chooses the one that provided the most discount. It takes a while, but the good thing is you can just leave it be and do something else, and it will find something for you.
Sorry it too so long to approve your comment. I had to test out the plug-in, but then life and website maintenance got in the way.
Unfortunately, that coupon (GDBBX1705) seems to not be working now and there are no others available for renewal, as is usual for the past year or so. It takes so long to find anything. But Honey saved a lot of time, and it worked quite well for a new test domain I did. Got the price down to about $3 in a minute. Beautiful.
Don't worry about advertising. If it's something useful, advertise away. ;) Thank you very much. It seems like Honey will come in quite handy. For some reason, I always use coupons and check the coupon sites, and I've been using add-ons for years, but I never thought to check for coupon add-ons. I mostly use Firefox, so I will also be testing Coupons at Checkout and possibly others. I'll have to see if one finds discounts the other missed. Maybe I'll write a little post about both of them...if I can ever find the time.
