Various ideas have been rattling around in my head for years. More than a decade ago I started learning HTML and got my own little free space at Tripod. Hardly anything was accomplished there because summer break was over in two months, and after a while I only remembered the basics. But by 2008 I was still hungry to do something and decided to get a two-year package at HostGator on a Cyber Monday 75% off deal. Again, nothing came of it. I spent my scant few minutes of free time during the weekends re-learning HTML and CSS again - not even getting to XHTML and all the rest - and familiarizing myself with GIMP (a wonderful and free alternative to Photoshop). The problem with all that is I dedicated almost no time to the content part of it, just the look.
Why didn't I just start with a blog instead? No idea. Or even just decide quickly on a template and get to the writing? None of the free ones I found felt quite right. I can be really picky sometimes; it's ridiculous. And then I would take those templates and endlessly tweak them. I think what happens with me is that I have too many options, get excited by them all, try everything, and then never settle on one. Oh, and I also try to reinvent the wheel every time, even though all I have to do so are a couple of sticks and strawberry jam.
So I've finally decided: Why not do what the rest of the world has been doing for years? It makes sense since I tend to go on and on when writing about a subject that interests me. And can you guess what happened, knowing the bit about me that you do now? I was comparing blogging platforms for weeks. Of course I narrowed the dozens down to the two I started with: Blogger and WordPress. I ultimately didn't go with WP because they frown on affiliate links without your own content - not saying I would do that, but just in case - and I already had a Google account.
As for HostGator, if you need a host I would still recommend them because of all of the options and the sheer number of available services, plus the quick customer service.
